The People’s Party of Washington (PPOW) is dedicated to radically improving the lives of everyday people in Washington state. We can best accomplish that goal as part of a National People’s Party. That said, we regret to report we are concerned about some recent actions by the leadership of the National Movement for a People’s Party (MPP).
PPOW is committed to democracy and believes in the power of the people to determine their future. On the national level, we are witnessing actions by MPP leadership that run contrary to these beliefs
Building a new major national political party is not an easy task.
It requires the commitment and cooperation of many volunteers, fledgling and registered state People’s Party organizations, and the organization that brought us all together, that kindled the idea of a nationwide People’s Party: the Movement for a People’s Party.
PPOW is dedicated to creating a National People’s Party together with all 50 states and MPP.
Currently, PPOW’s working relationship with MPP is strained, but our commitment to working with them and other states to create a national party has not wavered. The tension in our relationship is caused by our respective definitions of what it means to be a democratically governed organization.
PPOW is democratic to its core. Volunteer members designed our party structure and decision-making process to hear everyone’s voice about decisions that will impact them.
Many people joined MPP because our current national parties and their candidates have not listened to the voices and desires of their members for decades.
Our solution was to create a flat party structure that facilitates participation and communication between and among members and our democratically elected leadership.
In contrast, MPP has created a hierarchical organization that does not emphasize meaningful participation in decision-making. At times, MPP leadership has allowed volunteers to have an up or down vote on an issue or decision.
However, PPOW does not believe voting alone equals democracy. Democracy means that the people have a voice in the process before the vote happens. It is because the voices of the American people are consistently ignored that we are continually presented with elections in which we are allowed to vote for the lesser of two evils.
The good news is that we have built strong coalitions with People’s Party members in other states. We are all working together to create a major National Party for the people, with or without the support of the current national leadership.
We have asked you to join us on this worthwhile journey, and we do not want to let you down. We are more focused and determined than ever. We are committed to having our voices heard and to fighting for the people to get their fair share of our nation’s wealth and success.
We will continue to persuade the MPP to become a more democratic and transparent organization. We are ever hopeful that MPP will transform into a political party that is truly a party of, for, and by the people. Regardless, PPOW will always be a deeply democratic party that will always listen to the people and fight for what the people want.
